From Nursery Practitioner To Nursery Leader: Real Stories From Our Team.

One of the things I believe most strongly about early years is that it attracts the most dedicated, capable and emotionally intelligent people you'll find anywhere. And one of the things that frustrates me most about the sector is how often those people aren't given the chance to fulfill their potential.

They arrive full of energy and passion. They're brilliant with the children. They build meaningful relationships with families. They show instincts that take years to develop in other industries. And then, all too often, there's nowhere obvious to go. No clear path. No one is pushing them forward.

At MiChild, we are doing something different. We have built a place where the practitioners who are brilliant at their jobs today can become the room leaders, the nursery managers and the sector leaders of tomorrow, and where they have genuine, structured support to get there.

Our apprenticeship programmes are central to that. Working with The Childcare Company, an Ofsted-rated Good provider, we offer the Early Years Educator Level 3 for those building their foundational qualification, the Early Years Lead Practitioner Level 5 for practitioners who are ready to take a more senior role, and the Visionary Leaders in Childcare Level 5 for those with their sights set on leadership. These aren't short courses. They take commitment; eighteen months plus EPA for the Level 3, twenty-five months plus EPA for the Level 5. But the outcome is a practitioner who is genuinely, substantively qualified, not just certificated.

Alongside the apprenticeships, our MiLearning Lounge gives every team member access to face-to-face CPD in purpose-built training spaces at Moorevilla Nursery in Blackpool and Stepping Stones Nursery in Stockport. These sessions are delivered by our Quality and Early Years Team and cover the topics that matter most in our nurseries: SEND, outdoor learning, positive behaviour, MiChild Matters curriculum, and working with babies. It's the kind of training that changes how practitioners think about their practice, not just what they do, but why they do it.

What makes the difference, though, isn't just the programmes. It's the culture around them. Our annual MiChild Awards include categories like Room Leader of the Year and SENCO of the Year and Apprentice of the Year, not because we want to hand out trophies, but because we want people to feel that their growth and their commitment are genuinely noticed. We won Room Leader of the Year at the NMT Awards in 2021, and we've been a Day Nurseries Top 20 UK Provider every year from 2021 to 2026. Those recognitions belong to the people who are doing the work.

I'll be honest: working in early years is some of the most rewarding work there is, but it is also genuinely difficult and demanding. It is hard work, day in and day out, both emotionally and physically, and anyone who has done it knows that. Building a progression culture on top of that isn't easy either. The sector is stretched. The workforce turnover is significant. It takes real effort, real investment and real belief that it's worth doing. But we've seen what happens when you get it right, when someone who joined us as an apprentice grows into a room leader, and when a room leader grows into a manager. The confidence they carry. The pride they have. The way it changes everything about how they show up for the children and families in their care.

That's the journey we want to be part of. For as many people as possible, across all fourteen of our nurseries and wherever MiChild grows next.

If you're working in early years and you're wondering whether there's more, there is. Come and find it with us.
