# How Do I Know If a Nursery Is Good? Ofsted, Reviews and Red Flags

Find out how to interpret new Ofsted reports, scrutinise parent reviews and spot signs of safe, supportive childcare in nurseries to help you choose.

![DSC02833](https://michild-nurseries.transforms.svdcdn.com/production/images/DSC02833.jpg?w=1800&h=1013&q=80&fm=webp&fit=crop&crop=focalpoint&fp-x=0.5&fp-y=0.5&dm=1785934406&s=c120a87b6aa5e7b140c27abf6276fdb3)

A good nursery provides safe, responsive care, helps children learn through everyday experiences and communicates openly with families. But how can you tell whether those qualities are there before your child starts?

Ofsted findings, parent reviews and an all-important in-person visit offer useful information. Each shows something different, so the clearest picture comes from looking at them together.

At [MiChild](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/), we understand that choosing childcare involves a lot of trust, especially if it’s your first time. You want to know who will comfort your child, how their needs will be understood and whether someone will listen when *you* have a concern. Here’s how to assess the information available, with inspection guidance for nurseries in England.

## **Key Takeaways**

- Read the latest [Ofsted](https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ofsted) findings in full, checking the setting’s identity, inspection date and any areas requiring improvement.
- New Ofsted report cards use different grades from older reports; the two systems cannot be directly compared.
- Look for specific, recent patterns in parent feedback, then discuss relevant questions with the nursery.
- Warm relationships, clear safeguarding procedures and honest communication matter more than a polished first impression.

## **How Do I Know If a Nursery Is Good?**

Ask how the nursery cares for children in practice. Statements such as “we support every child” mean more when staff explain what that support involves. How would staff help an overwhelmed toddler, respond to an early nap or tell you about a difficult morning?

Look for answers that recognise your child’s specific needs and explain how adults would respond.

### **Put Three Sources Together**

Bring these sources together when comparing settings.

- Use inspection information to understand independent findings
- Read reviews to hear families’ experiences
- Pay a visit to explore how the setting works now

These sources may not agree completely. An inspection cannot tell you whether the journey fits your working day. A friend’s recommendation may concern a different age group. Consider what each source can show, then follow up anything important.

When exploring[ our nurseries](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/our-nurseries), the same approach applies: we ask that parents look at the individual setting and the room your child would join to decide if it’s the right fit.

### **Ask for Examples, Not Just Reassurance**

Specific examples help the nursery demonstrate its approach. Ask what you would hear at collection and how staff respond to children’s changing interests. Prepare questions about what matters to you.

On a Reddit thread about [things to consider when choosing a nursery](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeyondTheBumpUK/s/XIzdyLVirl), [u/Girly\_Trex](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeyondTheBumpUK/comments/1ct8yfl/comment/l4aiyvl/) offered their perspective as a parent:

*“Things we asked and wish we would've asked about were:*

- *staff turnover - and look around at staff age (if they're all really young and green, that's a red flag for me)*
- *how they handle various dietary requirements for children (daughter had an egg allergy and she kept being given eggs)*
- *what activities they have outside the nursery (more relevant for preschoolers)*
- *what themed activities they have*
- *how often do they organise parent evenings/activities*
- *how do they communicate with you re. your child's milestones and development*
- *how do they feed babies (spoon feeding, self feeding)*
- *potty training policy*
- *behaviour management policy (e.g. what happens if your kid is a biter)*
- *confirm that all staff have received first aid training*
- *what do they do in case they're running short on staff (do they get people from other nurseries or temp staff or send e-mails asking parents to not bring the kid in)*
- *asked them to send us their seasonal menus*
- *what happens in cases of contagious diseases and for reportable diseases as well (when my daughter had scarlet fever it took the nursery two days to notify other parents which is again a red flag)”*

We have a[ ‘day at nursery’ guide](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/learning/a-day-in-the-life) that can help you picture everyday routines before discussing them during a visit.

![DSC07038](https://michild-nurseries.transforms.svdcdn.com/production/images/DSC07038.jpg?w=1200&h=675&q=80&fm=webp&fit=crop&crop=focalpoint&fp-x=0.5&fp-y=0.5&dm=1785933517&s=2dba8128329708b6a50c103e2464e9bf)

## **Understanding Ofsted Ratings and Reports**

Ofsted inspects and regulates relevant childcare provision in England. Its findings are an important source of independent information, but you need to check which reporting system you’re reading.

### **How to Understand New Ofsted Report Cards**

Older nursery inspection reports may show an overall judgement such as Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement or Inadequate.

Under the newer approach, introduced in November 2025, report cards give grades for separate areas rather than a single overall judgement. The grades are:

- Exceptional
- Strong standard
- Expected standard
- Needs attention
- Urgent improvement

Safeguarding is recorded separately as “met” or “not met”.

Ofsted’s[ guide to report cards and grades](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/understanding-ofsted-report-cards-and-grades) explains that the new grades cannot be directly compared with the old ones. “Expected standard” means the provider is meeting the standard expected; it should not be interpreted as a disappointing result simply because higher grades exist.

A setting may receive different grades across different areas. Read the explanations to understand its strengths and improvement priorities.

### **Find the Correct Setting**

1. Search the[ Ofsted reports website](https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/) using the nursery’s name, postcode or unique reference number, often shortened to URN.
2. Check the address carefully, particularly where several settings share a similar name. If ownership or registration has changed, ask the nursery which record applies.
3. Check the inspection date and any newer published information. A website badge provides less context than the complete report.
4. If a new nursery has no inspection report yet, that alone does not establish poor quality. Check its registration and ask how leaders monitor care while awaiting inspection.

### **Turn Findings Into Useful Questions**

Choose findings relevant to your family. If inspectors praised communication and language, ask what that looks like in your child’s room.

If the report describes an improvement priority, ask what changed, when it changed and how the manager checks whether the change is working.

You’re checking whether the team understands the findings and can explain its response, rather than assessing professional practice yourself.

## **What Is Safeguarding in a Nursery?**

Safeguarding means protecting children from harm and supporting their welfare. It includes recognising and responding to concerns about abuse or neglect, alongside the procedures that help keep children safe each day.

The[ Early Years Foundation Stage framework](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/early-years-foundation-stage-framework--2) sets statutory requirements for early years providers in England. Responsibility for meeting these requirements rests with the provider.

### **Look for Clear Responsibilities**

Ask who leads safeguarding, who covers their absence and how staff raise concerns. You should also know how to report something yourself, like a concern about a manager.

Everyday examples help make this understandable. How does the nursery check who is collecting a child? How are allergies communicated to everyone preparing or serving food? How are accidents recorded and shared with families?

Our[ key policies](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/families/key-policies) are a good example. They provide a starting point for these conversations.

### **Which Red Flags Need Attention?**

Concerns deserve attention when they involve children’s treatment, safety or an unwillingness to address problems. Examples might be:

- Repeatedly dismissing a child’s distress or using humiliating language.
- Allowing collection without checking the adult’s authority.
- Brushing aside an allergy or medical instruction.
- Giving contradictory explanations about an incident without investigating.
- Refusing to explain how a safeguarding concern can be raised.

### **Know Where to Raise a Concern**

For routine concerns, speak to the nursery and follow its complaints procedure. Keep a factual note of what happened, when and what response you received. Keep any evidence like emails, text messages or photos.

The government’s[ childcare complaints guidance](https://www.gov.uk/complain-about-childcare) explains when concerns can be taken to Ofsted. Ofsted considers regulatory issues but cannot settle individual disagreements.

If you believe a child is at risk, contact the local council’s children’s services or police. Call 999 if a child is in immediate danger; you do not need to wait for a nursery complaint to be resolved.

## **How to Use Reviews to Find the Best Nursery in Your Town**

If you’re wondering where to find the best nursery recommendations, start with people who can describe recent, direct experience. Friends, local parent groups and independent review platforms can all help you build a shortlist. Check Facebook for parent groups in the area. Your council’s childcare directory or family information service can help identify local provision. A directory listing gives you somewhere to start, rather than a personal recommendation.

### **Read Beyond the Star Rating**

Check review dates, numbers and details. Several recent accounts of thoughtful settling support tell you more than one comment saying “amazing nursery”. Look for accounts of communication, care and responses to concerns. Check which room they describe, because your child may join a different team.

A good nursery will have[ parent testimonials](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/families/parent-testimonials) like ours which offer families’ perspectives. As with any provider’s selected testimonials, read them alongside independent information.

### **Look for Patterns and Context**

Read negative reviews carefully. A negative review deserves consideration, but it may not provide the whole story. Check whether several people describe the same issue and whether the feedback is recent.

Notice how the nursery responds. Inviting a private conversation can be appropriate: staff should not disclose confidential family information to defend themselves publicly. An absence of detailed public explanation does not necessarily mean nothing was investigated.

Avoid treating anonymous allegations as established facts. Where a review raises a relevant question, ask the nursery about its current process.

### **Make Recommendations Relevant to You**

Instead of asking a friend only whether they liked the nursery, ask more specific questions, like what happened when their child struggled or their arrangements changed.

Their priorities may differ from yours. You might need support with a home language, particular medical arrangements or reassurance about[ settling into nursery](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/families/settling-in-process). Use recommendations to guide your questions.

![DSC04649](https://michild-nurseries.transforms.svdcdn.com/production/images/DSC04649.jpg?w=1200&h=675&q=80&fm=webp&fit=crop&crop=focalpoint&fp-x=0.5&fp-y=0.5&dm=1785934662&s=8dee6a4de647c7ea7cbf46d9da1faf37)

## **Signs of a High-Quality Early Years Setting**

*“We looked around three nurseries, and whilst the most expensive one had great facilities we both got the impression they just didn't care if she was there or not. None of the staff interacted or really even interacted with her whilst we were visiting.*

*The nursery we went with seemed to genuinely want to spend time with my daughter, asked to hold her (she was still a baby and I was absolutely fine with it), and they were just lovely people.”*

- [u/sunshine-lollipops](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeyondTheBumpUK/comments/1ct8yfl/comment/l4aabai/), [Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeyondTheBumpUK/s/qd29Jzndmj)

This is one parent’s experience of finding a nursery in the UK, but it highlights something useful to observe: whether practitioners take a genuine interest in your child, while respecting their comfort and your wishes.

### **Children Are Known as Individuals**

Ask how staff learn about your child and share that knowledge. Listen for questions about home routines, interests, important relationships and communication. Explore[ SEND and inclusion support](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/learning/send-and-inclusion) where relevant. A useful conversation considers practical adjustments and partnership with your family, without promising identical progress for every child.

### **Learning Has a Clear Purpose**

Children should have opportunities to explore and practise skills with interested adults nearby. Ask how the team builds on play, rather than judging quality by the number of activities displayed.

Our[ MiChild Matters framework](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/learning/michild-matters-framework) helps explain our approach and is a good example of what nurseries should consider. Discuss how learning opportunities change as children develop, including those who need extra support.

### **Communication Goes Both Ways**

*“We found that our nursery were really good with the children, but God were they \*\*\*\* with everything else.*

*Poor/confusing communication, spelling errors on stuff, that sort of thing.*

*Maybe ask for a call with the manager, talk through everything and see if you're reassured. Ask for their policy on stuff like coming in at collection and recording nappies and meals. Point out the discrepancies.”*

- [u/1182990](https://www.reddit.com/r/UKParenting/comments/1h0zrsd/comment/lz7rh7k/), [Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/UKParenting/s/i5s9shhH0u)

Another parent on the UK parenting subreddit described good care alongside confusing communication. Depending on what’s important to you, find out exactly how the nursery communicates with parents throughout the day and in the long term.

Daily updates are useful when they help you understand your child’s experience. Technology helps nurseries make this easier for parents. Our[ Famly app information](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/families/family-zone-famly-app) explains one way families stay connected.

### **Leaders Welcome Thoughtful Questions**

*“Staff turnover was quite important to me as high turnover suggests unhappy staff. I liked how the room leads had been there for 3+ years.”*

- [u/FluffyOwl89](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeyondTheBumpUK/comments/1ct8yfl/comment/l4adbb4/), [Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeyondTheBumpUK/s/84NaLZHY3g)

Ask about changes, why people leave and how familiar care is maintained. Turnover does not immediately prove staff are unhappy, and a practitioner’s age does not establish competence. But consistently high staff turnover could be a sign that something is not quite right.

You should be able to discuss staffing, care and[ fees and funding](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/families/fees-and-funding) without feeling rushed. Clear answers help you understand both the experience and the commitment. After visiting, note what you observed, what staff explained and anything still unclear. Follow up before deciding.

If you’re ready to explore a setting,[ book a MiChild nursery visit](https://michildnurseries.co.uk/book-a-visit). Bring the questions that matter to you, and we’ll talk through what everyday care could look like for your child.
