# Helping Little Ones Feel Safe, Heard And Ready To Learn.

![DSC03367](https://michild-nurseries.transforms.svdcdn.com/production/images/DSC03367.jpg?w=1800&h=1013&q=80&fm=webp&fit=crop&crop=focalpoint&fp-x=0.5&fp-y=0.5&dm=1785937098&s=cf2769dbe27b28b0d564e5aace876f4a)

Before a child can learn, they need to feel safe. Before they’ll explore, they need to feel secure. And before they’ll share what they’re thinking, they need to know that someone is genuinely listening. It is one of the truest things about early years: everything good that happens for a child grows out of feeling safe, heard and settled. Get that right, and a child is ready for the world. That belief sits at the very centre of how we do things at MiChild.

Feeling safe begins with a relationship. From a child’s very first days with us, they are matched with a key person: a familiar adult who gets to know them, reads their cues, and becomes a steady, trusted presence. It starts before a child has even settled. When a family joins us, we complete an ‘All About Me’ document together with their key person, capturing everything that makes their child unique, from their routines and preferences to their comforts and needs. That document travels with the child throughout their nursery journey, and whenever they move to a new room, a fresh one is completed with their new key person, so that understanding is never lost at a transition.

We take the settling-in process just as seriously. We know that leaving your child for the first time can be emotional, so we’ve built a thorough, gentle process designed to grow trust and security. It begins with a first visit, includes the ‘All About Me’ conversation, and then moves through a minimum of five settling sessions that gradually increase in length. At least one of those sessions takes place during a mealtime, so a child can experience that important part of the day before their first full day arrives. Nothing is rushed. A child moves at their own pace, and moves on when they’re ready.

Feeling safe is also, of course, about being safe, and here we go well beyond the everyday. Safeguarding at MiChild is a culture, not just a policy. All staff complete comprehensive safeguarding training before they are permitted to enter a nursery room, with no exceptions, and every member of staff holds a valid paediatric first aid qualification, with annual refresher training that exceeds the legal requirement. Our nurseries have CCTV throughout and electronic door entry, staff mobile phones are signed in and out at every shift and never permitted in nursery rooms, and we audit our buildings continuously. It all works quietly in the background, so that children can simply get on with being children.

Feeling heard is the next piece, and it matters as much for a baby as for a pre-schooler. In the baby room, being heard means a key person reading the tiny cues, responding with warmth and patience, and offering the sights, sounds and textures that spark curiosity. Further up, it might mean turning something a child noticed on the way in into a whole morning’s investigation that follows where their imagination leads. Our curriculum, MiChild Matters, is deliberately written in a child’s voice, which is a lovely reminder of whose experience really matters. It nurtures the Confident Communicator in every child, developing language through stories, songs and meaningful conversations, and it helps children become Self-Aware Super-Heroes who understand their own emotions and build positive relationships with others.

For some children, feeling heard takes a little more, and we are ready for that. Every nursery has a trained SENCO who works closely with each child’s key person. Baseline assessments are completed within the first four to six weeks, followed by a communication and language assessment at twelve weeks, so that emerging needs are identified early and support is put in place quickly. We work in partnership with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, early help teams, dietitians and portage services, and where appropriate we support the process towards an Education, Health and Care Plan. Inclusion isn’t a specialism at MiChild. It is a baseline expectation, and our nurseries are genuinely multicultural places where every family is helped to feel welcome and understood.

When a child feels safe and heard, being ready to learn follows almost naturally. A secure child is a curious one. They’ll try, and stumble, and try again. They’ll ask questions, take a small risk, and light up when someone shares the moment with them. That is exactly what MiChild Matters is built to nurture, seeing the whole child across all areas of development, and it is aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage and grounded in Birth to Five Matters and Development Matters, so families can trust that what happens in our nurseries reflects the best of current early years thinking.

The proof isn’t in a framework, though. It is in a child who asks to come to nursery on a Saturday, or a parent who tells us their little one’s confidence and language have come on in leaps. All of our inspected nurseries are rated Good by Ofsted, and that tells you something real about consistency and quality. But the thing we care about most is simpler than a rating. It is a child walking through the door and feeling, without having to think about it, that this is a place where they are known, where someone is listening, and where they are free to learn. Safe, heard and ready. That, to us, is where it all begins.
